Women’s Health & Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation in Teddington
Being medically treated and being fully recovered are not the same thing. Our nurse-led women’s health service helps you close that gap, rebuilding strength, function and confidence after surgery, childbirth or a change in your body, with movement matched to where you actually are.
The service is led by Adele Smyth, a Registered Nurse with over 26 years of clinical experience and a specialism in women’s health. She supports women through pelvic floor problems, prolapse, post-surgical recovery and the changes of perimenopause and menopause.
Many of the women Adele sees have been discharged from surgical or medical care with no clear plan for what comes next, cleared on paper, but still unsure what movement is safe and still not feeling like themselves. Her role is to bridge that gap: assessing where you are now, then building a paced, personalised plan that takes you from cleared on paper to confident in your body.
Adele combines her nursing background with training in clinical Pilates, reformer and yoga, using movement as a structured, clinically-informed form of rehabilitation, not a generic exercise sheet handed to a condition that needs individual understanding.
Conditions we help with:
- Pelvic organ prolapse-at any stage, whether managed conservatively, before surgery, or in recovery after a repair
- Pelvic floor dysfunction — including weakness, overactivity and postnatal pelvic floor concerns
- Post-hysterectomy recovery — rebuilding strength and confidence safely after surgery, including where surgical menopause is part of the picture
- Perimenopause and menopause — support through the physical changes of this stage
- Breast cancer rehabilitation — movement-based recovery after treatment and surgery
What to expect
- Initial assessment — a detailed one-to-one covering your surgical history, symptoms, goals and current activity levels. This is where your plan is built, not a generic exercise sheet.
- Clinical Pilates — reformer and mat-based, adapted to your stage of recovery and your specific condition. Sessions are paced and progressive, never pushed.
- Ongoing, individual support — your programme is built around you, not a fixed protocol, and adjusted as your recovery progresses.
Sometimes, where it would genuinely help, the assessment includes an internal (vaginal) examination to check how your pelvic floor is working. This is always done with your consent and only if you’re comfortable — Adele explains what it involves and why beforehand, a chaperone can be present if you’d prefer, and you can ask questions, take your time, or decline at any point.
Where your care needs it, Adele works alongside the clinic’s osteopaths and physiotherapists so your recovery is joined up. As you get stronger, there’s a natural route into our reformer Pilates studio for ongoing strength work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to start?
No. You can book directly for a women’s health assessment without a referral from your GP or consultant. If you’re recovering from surgery, Adele works in line with the advice from your surgical team.
I’ve been signed off by my consultant but still don’t feel right. Can you help?
Yes, this is exactly the gap the service is designed to fill. Being discharged from medical care doesn’t always mean you feel recovered, and Adele’s role is to help you rebuild from where you are now.
Is this physiotherapy?
No Adele is not a physiotherapist. This is nurse-led, movement-based rehabilitation. Adele is a Registered Nurse specialising in women’s health, using clinical Pilates and guided movement. Adele has completed extensive additional training in pelvic health rehabilitation including the courses with The Mummy MOT. Where your care also needs hands-on physiotherapy or osteopathy, she works alongside the clinic’s clinical team.
Can I start during perimenopause or menopause, not just after surgery?
Yes. Adele supports women through the physical changes of perimenopause and menopause, not only post-surgical recovery.
What happens in the first session?
A detailed one-to-one assessment. Adele will talk through your history, symptoms and goals, look at how you’re moving now, and use that to build your plan, so what you do next is right for you and your stage of recovery.
Will I need an internal examination?
Not necessarily. An internal (vaginal) examination is sometimes the most accurate way to assess how your pelvic floor is working, so Adele may suggest one where it would genuinely help. It’s always your choice: she’ll explain what it involves and why beforehand, a chaperone can be present if you’d prefer, and she’ll go entirely at your pace. You can decline or stop at any time, and your assessment can still go ahead without it.
